Magazine names Minneapolis one of best for families in 2011
The results are in! Ranked fourth on Parenting magazine's 2011 list of "Best Cities for Families" is Minneapolis and St. Paul. The results are based on quality of schools, home affordability, crime rates, jobs and recreational opportunities.
According to the magazine, the Twin Cities are rated as a premier location for families thanks to their extensive parks and recreation systems, which include a bevy of family-friendly bike paths and an abundance of lakes that provide numerous opportunities for outdoor fun.
Additionally, there are a considerable number of theaters and museums that often have special kid-friendly events or exhibits.
Sports are also an important factor for some families who want to live near professional teams. The Twin Cities have teams in all the major professional sports leagues, including the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Timberwolves, Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Wild.
Youth in the Twin Cities’ education systems perform well, ranking a close second behind Boston in math and reading scores, according to Parenting.
Top Minneapolis companies donate funds to city schools
Families looking at Minneapolis homes for sale will appreciate the support Minneapolis Public Schools receive from Minnesota-based businesses. Top corporations in the state donated more than $13 million to Minneapolis’ schools, Minneapolis Public Schools and AchieveMpls announced, which will be used to help fund educational projects, programs and initiatives through 2014.
Target, Cargill, General Mills and Medtronic donated the funds for numerous educational purposes, including helping kids with early literacy, preparing students for college and providing leadership and professional development for the schools’ principals and administrators.
"These generous gifts represent the best of what makes Minnesota great: A strong partnership between the private and public sectors on behalf of our children's futures," said Pam Costain, CEO of AchieveMpls, a non-profit group that supports Minneapolis Public Schools.
Target Foundation president Laysha Ward told Minnesota Public Radio that a recent study, which shows the importance of early literacy programs in public schools, was a main factor in the company's decision to donate the money.
