New to Market Properties in Minneapolis

Minneapolis ranks highly among bicyclists

With numerous bike paths and bike lanes, it should come as no surprise that biking is popular for recreation as well as commuting in Minneapolis.

Many Minneapolis residents take two-wheeled transportation from their Minnesota homes to work every morning. The New York Times recently reported that a review of Census Bureau data by Deakin University found nearly 4 percent of residents ride to work regularly. Some experts expressed surprise given the relatively cold winter climate.

Women are more frequent riders in Minneapolis than other cities, as more than 30 percent of bicycle commuters in the city are women - the second-highest ratio of women riders in the cities included in the study. Only Portland, Oregon, finished higher.

Across the country, cities have increased spending on bicycle lanes and other amenities. Federal expenditures on them has doubled over the past several years.

The bicycling trend has resulted in national acclaim for the bicycle infrastructure in the city. Bicycling magazine recently ranked Minneapolis as the top city for riders nationwide. If you enjoy biking, you’ll certainly find numerous biking opportunities close to Minneapolis homes for sale.

Magazine names Minneapolis one of best for families in 2011

The results are in! Ranked fourth on Parenting magazine's 2011 list of "Best Cities for Families" is Minneapolis and St. Paul. The results are based on quality of schools, home affordability, crime rates, jobs and recreational opportunities.

According to the magazine, the Twin Cities are rated as a premier location for families thanks to their extensive parks and recreation systems, which include a bevy of family-friendly bike paths and an abundance of lakes that provide numerous opportunities for outdoor fun.

Additionally, there are a considerable number of theaters and museums that often have special kid-friendly events or exhibits.

Sports are also an important factor for some families who want to live near professional teams. The Twin Cities have teams in all the major professional sports leagues, including the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Timberwolves, Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Wild.

Youth in the Twin Cities’ education systems perform well, ranking a close second behind Boston in math and reading scores, according to Parenting.

Top Minneapolis companies donate funds to city schools

Families looking at Minneapolis homes for sale will appreciate the support Minneapolis Public Schools receive from Minnesota-based businesses. Top corporations in the state donated more than $13 million to Minneapolis’ schools, Minneapolis Public Schools and AchieveMpls announced, which will be used to help fund educational projects, programs and initiatives through 2014.

Target, Cargill, General Mills and Medtronic donated the funds for numerous educational purposes, including helping kids with early literacy, preparing students for college and providing leadership and professional development for the schools’ principals and administrators.

"These generous gifts represent the best of what makes Minnesota great: A strong partnership between the private and public sectors on behalf of our children's futures," said Pam Costain, CEO of AchieveMpls, a non-profit group that supports Minneapolis Public Schools.

Target Foundation president Laysha Ward told Minnesota Public Radio that a recent study, which shows the importance of early literacy programs in public schools, was a main factor in the company's decision to donate the money.
