Don't make these open house mistakes

While it's common sense that a clean and organized home is vital to hosting a successful open house, many sellers overlook this aspect of preparation. Here are three mistakes you don't want to make when holding an open house for your home.

1. Many people who hold open houses forget to clean their homes thoroughly. Visible dirt can be off-putting for many prospective buyers, so a sparkling clean home is essential to the success of your open house. Remember that open house attendees have license to look in every nook and cranny, so don't skip over any areas or try to hide clutter in a closet. Everything should have a place, and each place – including drawers – should be neat and clean.

2. When it's warm outside, you should ensure that your home is cool. Similarly, if the weather is chilly, turn on the heat in your home. The goal is to make all visitors feel comfortable regardless of the outdoor weather conditions.

While it's common sense that a clean and organized home is vital to hosting a successful open house, many sellers overlook this aspect of preparation.

3. Avoid leaving bills lying around for open house visitors to see. Not only do you want to remove this type of distracting clutter, but it's important to keep the visitor's mind on the house itself, rather than on monthly payments that may not reflect their personal habits or future bills.
